Louisiana's First Zero Energy Building
Solar energy to power grid-tied commercial
business in New Orleans
When Eric Oliver,
President of
EMO
Energy
gets his
electricity bill every month, it should be about
zero.
His New Orleans office
will utilize energy savings measures in
construction and operation to get their
anticipated annual energy consumption down to
approximately 6020 kwh. Their solar power
array on the rooftop will take over from there.
20 - 200 watt solar panels generating
electricity will produce enough power to equal
their consumption. The result is a net
zero energy bill.
Thanks to the
Louisiana Renewable Energy Act of 2003
signed by Gov. Foster and authored by Jeff Shaw
and the
Louisiana
Solar Energy Society,
homes and businesses
can grid-tie their renewable energy system to
their local utility.
Some of the features of
the building are: Super insulated building M2
building envelope, Geothermal heat pump cooling,
occupancy sensors, high efficiency windows,
daylighting and solar shading, and EnergyStar
office equipment.
EMO Energy is part of
a growing national trend toward energy
conservation.
